Steps for making a claim for earthquake damage

1 December 2016

The aftermath of earthquakes can be even more stressful if people don’t know how to make an insurance claim or seek additional help, says Insurance & Financial Services Ombudsman, Karen Stevens. The IFSO Scheme has recommended steps for individuals, families and businesses affected by the earthquakes.

“It’s a very difficult time for many people, including home and business owners,” says Insurance & Financial Services Ombudsman, Karen Stevens. “By following these steps we hope people can seek the help they need, do what they can to get insurance cover, and avoid the sorts of issues and problems we see arise in complaints.”

Steps for individuals and families include:

  • Contact your insurer
  • Tell your insurer about any special requirements you have (for example if you are elderly or have a disability)
  • Document the damage (take photos or videos, make lists)
  • Always provide accurate information
  • Ask about temporary accommodation cover if needed
